Imaginá que estás obligado a viajar por el desierto con el nuevo novio de tu madre que odiás. Ahora agregale que, en medio de la nada, tropezás con la escena de un triple asesinato y te llevas la única pista que puede delatar al asesino.
Esto es Death Valley, un thriller de terror donde un niño se convierte en la presa principal de un psicópata en un viaje que se transformó en la peor pesadilla familiar.
Lanzada en la época dorada del slasher, Death Valley intenta ser diferente, mezclando la persecución con un drama familiar intenso. Y esa es tanto su mayor fortaleza, como también su peor error.
Lo más destacable es la actuación brillante de Peter Billingsley como Billy. El drama psicológico de un niño resentido funciona para crear una tensión seria y pausada, algo que valoro mucho en el terror. La atmósfera de persecución en el desierto es efectiva, asistida por una banda sonora escalofriante que te mete en la trama.
Pero por otro lado, el guion se marea. Mike y Sally son personajes débiles y aburridos, lo que cansa en los momentos de drama. La película se siente torpe, lenta y, lo peor de todo, inconsistente. El asesino carece de motivaciones claras y la falta de intensidad en el terror la deja como un producto tímido con un giro final pobre.
En fin, película con una premisa original que se pierde en una ejecución inconsistente. Si buscás un thriller psicológico pausado de los ochenta y valorás la actuación de Billingsley, dale una oportunidad. Si esperás un slasher imprescindible, no es el caso.
