Drawing from Montgomery’s unique place at the center of U.S. history—from slavery to the Civil Rights Movement to today—this talk explores how political power, economic investment, and local leadership must work together to create lasting change. It argues that while representation matters, real transformation comes from reshaping systems: banking, capital access, procurement, and local governance.
Through candid reflections on leadership, backlash, and hard choices, the talk challenges audiences to move beyond symbolism toward structural change—and to recognize that the future of democracy, equity, and opportunity will be built not in Washington, but in cities and communities across the South. Steven Reed is the Mayor of Montgomery, Alabama—the historic birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement—and a leading national voice on local governance, economic equity, and systems-level change. As the city’s first Black mayor, Reed has focused on transforming Montgomery through substantive policy shifts that connect political power to economic opportunity.
During his tenure, Reed has prioritized public-private partnerships, minority participation in city contracting, and redirecting institutional capital toward community-serving financial institutions. His leadership reflects a core philosophy: that changing systems matters more than changing symbols, and that lasting progress requires courage, persistence, and local action.
Reed previously served as President of the African American Mayors Association, where he worked with mayors nationwide to strengthen Black political power and protect hard-won gains at the local level. Widely respected for his willingness to take political risk in service of long-term impact, Reed continues to advocate for reinvesting in cities—particularly across the American South—as essential to the future of democracy and economic inclusion.
