Not crushing your clove is one of the most common mistakes people make when adding a clove to their coffee. Crushing the clove helps release eugenol, the beneficial compound responsible for many of the health benefits of cloves.
You also don’t need to drink coffee to experience the health benefits of cloves. You can add cloves to decaf coffee, black tea, herbal tea, or even hot water for similar benefits.
One clove a day is enough to get the benefits. Higher doses of eugenol can potentially thin the blood or irritate the gut, so there’s no need to overdo it.
Cloves can be very beneficial for gut health. Eugenol has demonstrated potent antiparasitic activity, and some studies have found cloves to outperform pharmaceutical dewormers against certain parasites. Cloves can also target certain intestinal bacteria and may help with SIBO and bloating.
Cloves also act as a natural GLP-1 and can help support healthy blood sugar levels.
