The Start of the NBA G League (ft. Chris Carrawell & Terrence Roberson)
The NBA G League, originally known as the NBDL (and later the D League), launched its inaugural season in November 2001. The original NBDL lineup featured eight teams, all located throughout the southeast portion of the United States: Asheville Altitude, Columbus River Dragons, Fayetteville Patriots, Greenville Groove, Huntsville Flight, Mobile Revelers, North Charleston Lowgators, and Roanoke Dazzle. At the time, none of the eight NBDL teams had NBA affiliations, with just eight players called up to the NBA during the 2001-02 season. Chris Andersen, the first ever NBDL draft pick, was also the league's first ever call up, leaving the Patriots to join the Denver Nuggets, ultimately leading to a productive 15-year NBA career, winning a championship with the Miami Heat in 2013. Some other notable call-ups in 2001-02 include Jason Hart, Anthony Johnson, and Tremaine Fowlkes.
By comparison, 81 players were called up during the 2023-24 season from 31 G League teams (2021-22 served as the highwater mark, with 164 call-ups during a COVID plagued campaign).
Around the 1:20 mark, Chris Carrawell noted, "It's tough for me because it seems like every player I played with at Duke got drafted." He's not too far off. Four of Carrawell's teammates were drafted within the first 14 picks of the 1999 NBA Draft (Elton Brand, Corey Maggette, Trajan Langdon, William Avery) with another selected two years later (Shane Battier).
While Carrawell never made an NBA appearance, he did enjoy an extensive professional career overseas.
The second player featured in the report above, Terrance Roberson, a Saginaw, Michigan native, made three regular season appearances with the Charlotte Hornets.
