Zimbabwe Opposition Asks African Union to Intervene as Mnangagwa Extends Term | Firstpost Africa

Zimbabwe has entered a new political era after President Emmerson Mnangagwa signed Constitutional Amendment Act No. 3 into law. The sweeping reforms extend presidential and parliamentary terms from five to seven years, postpone the next general election from 2028 to 2030, and open the door for future presidents to be chosen by Parliament rather than through a direct public vote. The government says the changes will promote stability and support long-term national development. However, opposition parties and legal experts argue the reforms concentrate more power within the ruling ZANU PF party and undermine democratic accountability. Court challenges are already being prepared, while calls for regional intervention are growing. The legislation marks Zimbabwe's biggest political transformation since Robert Mugabe's removal in 2017 and could redefine the country's political future for years to come. Alyson Le Grange brings you more on this story on Firstpost Africa.
