Kasachstan liegt eingeklemmt zwischen den Großmächten Russland und China. Es versucht seine geografische Lage und seine Rohstoffe zu seinem Vorteil zu nutzen.Kasachstan wurde jahrhundertelang vom Russischen Reich und dann von der Sowjetunion beherrscht. Im 20. Jahrhundert war es Testgelände für Atomwaffen und Startpunkt für den ersten Menschen im All: Juri Gagarin startete vom Weltraumbahnhof Baikonur. Auch heute noch hat Kasachstan enge Beziehungen zu Russland, das einer seiner wichtigsten Handelspartner und Garant für die Stabilität seines autokratischen politischen Systems ist.
Kasachstan vertieft aber auch seine Beziehungen zu China, das in dem Nachbarland Milliarden in Infrastrukturprojekte der "Neuen Seidenstraße" investiert hat. Unter anderem in den sogenannten "Mittlere Korridor", den beide als Alternativroute Richtung Europa nutzen können, falls die üblichen Handelswege - wie etwa die Straße von Hormus - blockiert sein sollten.
Der russische Angriffskrieg in der Ukraine hat Kasachstans Hinwendung zu China noch verstärkt. Gleichzeitig ist das Land für Russland als Verbündeter wichtiger geworden, etwa als Zwischenhändler sanktionierter Waren. Kasachstan versucht, gute Beziehungen zu China und Russland zu haben, ohne von einem der beiden zu abhängig zu werden. Es ist und bleibt ein Balanceakt.
