By tram through the Polish city of Wrocław | DW Documentary

The best way to appreciate Wrocław is from tram line No. 1. It has been rolling through the city for 140 years - passing rubble, after the war, and past renovated facades, modern apartment blocks and the grassy banks of the River Oder, today.

This film accompanies tram driver Tatjana Granowska on her daily journey through Wrocław, and features talks with people along tram line No. 1 - students, artists and other residents of this city on the Oder. They talk about their everyday lives and how this city in the heart of Europe is changing.

Tatjana Granowska worked in a travel agency for many years, helping others to discover the world. When that ended, the native Kazakh decided to make a fresh start and became a tram driver. Today, she steers the tram through the city -- and can’t imagine a better job.

Kamil Zaremba lost everything in the 1997 floods. Today, he lives on a houseboat on the Oder River. While many in the city fear the next big flood, he feels safe on the water. His floating home is also an inexpensive alternative, in a property market characterized by rising rents. His second houseboat, which is also his life's work, is moored next door: the "Odra Centrum" is an educational and cultural center attracting many young people.

Trained locksmith Zenon Dębowski was unemployed for a long time. Through the art project "The Colorful Courtyards" in the Nadodrze district, he found stability and community.

Wrocław is Poland’s third-largest city. "On Tram Tracks Through Wrocław - A City in Transition” is a cinematic invitation to discover the Lower Silesian metropolis - through the windows of a tram that’s been telling stories for 140 years.
