The biggest positive is Varun Dhawan. His energy, comic timing, expressions, and sheer screen presence keep the film alive even when the material struggles. There are a few moments in the second half that genuinely work and remind you why Varun can be one of Bollywood's most entertaining comedy actors. This is also an opinion shared by many early viewers who have singled out Varun's performance even when expressing mixed feelings about the film overall.
The bigger issue is the writing.
The humour often relies on outdated punchlines, repetitive rhyming jokes, lazy gags, and comic situations that feel recycled from older Bollywood films. The first half spends so much time setting things up that it often feels like the actual movie starts after the interval.
More importantly, the film highlights a larger problem facing Bollywood comedies today. Audiences have evolved. Comedy has evolved. But many mainstream Hindi comedies continue to rely on the same storytelling patterns, character archetypes, and joke structures that no longer feel fresh.
So is Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai the comeback Bollywood comedy needed, or another reminder that the genre desperately needs new voices and fresher writing?
