She bought the (kelp) farm, then grew something bigger | Suzie Flores | TEDxBoston
It sounds like a pilot pitch for a fish-out-of-water sitcom: A New York City marketing exec drops everything and buys a withering marina near the last commercial fishing dock in Connecticut, and starts a kelp farm with no farming experience... What real life newbie farmer Suzie Flores discovered went beyond what was in the water. Kelp creates a halo effect in the surrounding ecosystem, improving water quality and drawing back marine life. Sugar kelp, one of the fastest growing organisms on the planet, can also be harvested for food, animal feed, bioplastics, and fertilizer. While coastal communities that have worked on the water for generations are watching that way of life disappear, kelp farming offers something rare. It's a regenerative business that serves the ocean rather than extracting from it. Flores makes the case that working waterfronts are not relics. They are platforms for the next economy. Suzie Flores is the co-founder of Stonington Kelp Company, Connecticut's largest sugar kelp farm. A former market development executive, she left a corporate career in New York City, earned a degree in environmental science, and in 2016 began farming sugar kelp in the waters of Fisher's Island Sound with no professional farming or maritime experience. She partnered with GreenWave, the nonprofit regenerative ocean farming organization, to navigate permitting and establish her farm. She has since harvested more than 13,000 pounds of kelp in a single season, been featured on 60 Minutes, in Food & Wine, and on CT Public Radio, and was named Connecticut's Outstanding Young Farmer by the Department of Agriculture in 2021.
