Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on modern warfare the Great War and the Ottoman history during the World War I continues with a video on the fall of Jerusalem. Previously we covered the Rise of the Ottoman Empire from the humble beginnings as a small Turkic Beylik to the Fall of Constantinople 1453 covering all the major battles including (https://youtu.be/TDLmsiqhgns) and the reign of Mehmet II (https://youtu.be/TbqMBfxtOTI). In 1917, the Ottoman Empire faced catastrophe across the Middle East. Baghdad had fallen, Russian armies occupied much of eastern Anatolia, and the Arab Revolt threatened Ottoman control of the Hejaz. Yet the year’s decisive campaigns were only beginning. This episode follows Faisal, Auda Abu Tayi, and T.E. Lawrence across the desert to Aqaba, where an attack from the supposedly impossible landward side opened a new route toward Syria. In Palestine, General Edmund Allenby transforms the British campaign, breaks the Ottoman defenses at Beersheba and Gaza, and drives toward Jerusalem. After four centuries of Ottoman rule, the Holy City changes hands. The episode also examines the Balfour Declaration, the collapse of Russia’s Caucasus Army, and the sudden strategic opportunity created for the Ottomans in Armenia and Persia. Farther east, British and Indian forces push beyond Baghdad toward Samarrah and Ramadi, fighting Ottoman troops, disease, heat, and fragile supply lines. By year’s end, the empire has lost Mecca, Baghdad, and Jerusalem, but Russia’s revolution offers an unexpected reprieve. How close was the Ottoman Empire to collapse in 1917, and could it recover in 1918? Subscribe for more military history of World War I and the final years of the Ottoman Empire.
