A fine agosto sei ministri delle Finanze europei, Giancarlo Giorgetti compreso, scrivono a Bruxelles per chiedere un quadro comune che tassi gli extraprofitti delle compagnie energetiche: i margini sui prodotti raffinati, sostengono, crescono più dei prezzi del greggio. Nelle settimane seguenti Giorgetti fa del tema una priorità, convinto che i Paesi favorevoli siano in aumento ed si auspica che “il resto d’Europa si svegli”, con una discussione informale già fissata all’Ecofin di inizio ottobre. Dalla maggioranza arrivano i consensi, a partire da Augusta Montaruli, vicecapogruppo di Fratelli d’Italia alla Camera, che rivendica: "Bene la richiesta dei Paesi europei, tra cui l’Italia, di una tassazione comunitaria degli extraprofitti per permetterci di arginare i prezzi della benzina". Tutto cambia però martedì 6 ottobre a Strasburgo, al Parlamento europeo.

Nella plenaria di martedì il tema degli extraprofitti approda nella plenaria di Strasburgo, con un emendamento di S&D, Verdi e Left, sostenuto dal Movimento 5 Stelle. Il testo prende atto dell’impennata dei profitti di petrolio e gas dopo la guerra nel Golfo e la chiusura dello stretto di Hormuz, e chiede dunque alla Commissione di proporre "senza indugio" un prelievo sugli utili in eccesso delle grandi compagnie e di destinare il gettito a famiglie e PMI. Il testo, però, viene respinto: votano contro Fratelli d’Italia, Forza Italia e Vannacci, mentre la Lega si astiene.
