What happens when violence against women and girls is not seen as an isolated event, but as part of a wider global system?

In this talk, Geetanjali Gangoli explores violence and abuse against women and girls through a global feminist lens, examining how conflict, displacement, migration, and institutional systems shape lived experiences of gender-based violence.

Challenging the idea that conflict is gender-neutral, she reveals how violence against women and girls often exists as a continuum — before, during, and after war.

Drawing on research, statistics, and personal experiences, Geetanjali explores how women and girls are frequently reduced to symbols, cases, or numbers rather than recognised as individuals with voices, agency, and stories of their own.

This talk asks us to reconsider what justice, accountability, and meaningful change look like — and why listening to women’s experiences is essential to creating a more equal world. Geetanjali Gangoli is a Professor and Head of the Department of Sociology at Durham University, and a member of the University’s Centre for Research into Violence and Abuse. Her work focuses on gender-based violence and abuse, with particular expertise in examining how class, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and disability intersect to shape both the experience and prevention of such violence. Her research also explores social and feminist responses to these harms, with a particular focus on India and the UK. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Receive SMS online on sms24.me
