Can a wall really stop a desert from spreading? It sounds almost impossible, but both America and China have attempted massive environmental projects designed to protect land from drought, soil erosion, and destructive dust storms. Instead of building a normal concrete wall, these projects use enormous stretches of trees and vegetation as natural barriers. In this video, we explore why these huge “green walls” were created, how they work, and whether they can actually slow down one of nature’s biggest environmental threats — desertification.
In the United States, one of the most ambitious projects began during the devastating Dust Bowl era of the 1930s. Severe drought, strong winds, and poor farming practices caused fertile topsoil across the Great Plains to blow away in enormous dust storms. To fight the problem, the U.S. government launched the Shelterbelt Project, planting long rows of trees across several states. These trees acted as windbreaks, slowing powerful winds, protecting farmland, reducing soil erosion, and helping farmers preserve valuable agricultural land.
China later began an even larger environmental project known as the Three-North Shelter Forest Program, often called the “Great Green Wall of China.” The project aims to fight desertification across northern China, where expanding deserts and frequent sandstorms threaten farmland, villages, and major cities. Billions of trees have been planted across huge areas to stabilize loose soil, reduce wind speeds, control blowing sand, and restore damaged ecosystems. It is considered one of the largest tree-planting and land-restoration projects ever attempted in human history.
But building a green wall across thousands of kilometres is not as simple as planting more trees. Some areas have faced problems such as low tree survival rates, water shortages, unsuitable tree species, and the difficulty of maintaining forests in extremely dry environments. So, can these massive projects really stop deserts from expanding, or can they only slow the process down? In this video, we compare the American and Chinese projects, understand the science behind shelterbelts, and explore their successes, failures, challenges, and what they could teach us about fighting desertification in the future.
