Mauro ficou conhecido por criticar o desmatamento ilegal e defender a punição daqueles que querem produzir infringindo leis ambientais. Sua fazenda em Paragominas, a Marupiara, recebeu classificação ouro no programa Boas Práticas Agropecuárias - Bovinos de Corte, da Embrapa. Enquanto foi presidente do Sindicato dos Produtores Rurais de Paragominas, ele tirou a cidade dos rankings de desmatamento com o projeto Pecuária Verde.
