Former US President Donald Trump launched a scathing attack on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, accusing him of mishandling the war with Russia and failing to seek diplomatic resolutions.Speaking at a conference in Florida on February 19, Trump blamed Zelensky for escalating the war and claimed that Ukraine "talked the U.S. into spending $350 billion" on a conflict that "never had to start."
Trump: 'War Would Never Have Started If I Was President'
"President Zelensky talked the United States into spending $350 billion to go into a war that basically couldn't be won, that never had to start and never would have started if I was president, not even a chance," Trump stated.
He criticised Zelensky's refusal to hold elections, questioning Ukraine's polling credibility amid widespread destruction.
"I love Ukraine, but Zelensky has done a terrible job. His country is shattered, and millions of people have unnecessarily died," Trump added.
Saudi Arabia’s Role in Peace Talks
Trump also praised Saudi Arabia for attempting to mediate peace and hinted that Zelensky could have attended talks in the region if he had been willing.
"They'll never settle that war without our involvement. That's why they did such a great job this weekend. That's why Saudi Arabia did such a great job this weekend in hosting," Trump noted.
The Biden administration has not yet responded to Trump’s remarks, which add to the growing political debate over continued U.S. involvement in Ukraine.
