Trauma and war-crime fears haunt Israeli soldiers | DW News

A fragile ceasefire is now holding in Gaza, after two years of fighting. As the dust settles, accounts are emerging from Israeli soldiers, struggling to cope with the psychological consequences of their actions in Gaza. Trauma and moral injury have driven an increasing number of soldiers to attempt or commit suicide. DW’s Senior International Correspondent Fanny Facsar spoke with a former combat soldier dealing with the mental health repercussions of his deployment in the war. DW reached out to the IDF regarding allegations that commanders ordered soldiers to fire at unarmed Palestinians in Gaza. The IDF rejected these claims, stating: “The IDF does not intentionally shoot at innocent civilians (…) Reports of harm to civilians are examined through the IDF’s verification mechanisms,” the military told DW. Gaza health officials says that nearly 70,000 Palestinians have been killed during the Gaza war — most of them through Israeli military attacks and the majority of those killed are civilians, according to the UN.
