James Barnes schreibt im Vorwort der Partitur zu seinem Werk:
"Die Dritte Sinfonie war ein Auftragswerk der United States Air Force Band, Washington D.C. Der damalige Dirigent dieses Orchesters, Col. Alan Bonner, sagte mir, er wolle ein wirklich großes Werk für Blasorchester haben. Er legte weder Wert auf Stil, Lange, Schwierigkeitsgrad oder sonst irgendetwas. Mir wurde also völlig freie Hand gelassen, das zu schreiben, was ich wollte. Ich begann an diesem Werk zu arbeiten, als ich in einer sehr schweren Lebenssituation war, nämlich kurz nachdem unser Baby Natalie gestorben war.
Diese Sinfonie ist das Werk mit dem größten emotionalen Kräfteverschleiß, das ich je komponiert habe. Müsste man ihr einen Beinamen geben, ich glaube „tragisch" würde gut zu ihr passen. Das Werk entwickelt sich von der tiefsten Dunkelheit der Verzweiflung bis hin zum Erstrahlen vor Erfüllung und Freude.
Der dritte Satz, FUR NATALIE, ist eine fantasia darüber, wie meine Welt ausgesehen hätte, wenn Natalie in ihr gelebt hatte. Es ist ein Abschiedslied für sie. [...]"
