Nevada National Guard Soldiers Compete in the Best Warrior Competition

The Army National Guard (ARNG) Best Warrior Competition (BWC) is an annual, multi-tiered event designed to identify the top junior enlisted Soldier and Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) in the Guard. It is widely considered one of the most grueling tests of physical and mental endurance in the military.

2026 National Competition Overview

The 2026 National Best Warrior Competition is the pinnacle of the Guard-specific circuit, where winners from seven geographic regions face off.

Dates: July 9–16, 2026
Location: Florida (hosted by the Florida National Guard)
The Stakes: National winners earn the title of "Soldier of the Year" or "NCO of the Year" for the entire Army National Guard and advance to the **U.S. Army Best Squad Competition** to represent the Guard against Active Duty and Reserve units.

The Road to the Top (Progression)

A Soldier cannot simply sign up; they must earn their spot through a rigorous elimination process:

1. Unit Level: Internal selection within a company or battalion.
2. State Level: Winners from various units compete at the state headquarters (usually held in March or April).
3. Regional Level: State winners proceed to one of seven regional competitions (usually held in May or June).
4. National Level: The top Soldier and NCO from each region (14 total competitors) meet for the ARNG National BWC.

Core Events and Challenges
The competition typically lasts 4 to 6 days and includes more than 20 graded events. While specific "mystery events" change every year, the core components include:

Physical Fitness: Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT), Obstacle Courses, and "Stress Shoots."
Tactical Skills: Weapons qualification (M4 rifle, M17 pistol), hand grenades, and medical lanes.
Navigation: Day and Night Land Navigation (finding coordinates in dense terrain).
Endurance: A timed 12-mile Ruck March (or the 18.6-mile Norwegian Foot March).
Intellectual: Written exams, essay writing, and a formal “Appearance Board: before senior SGM/CSMs.

Recent 2026 Updates

Regional Winners: Region II (Mid-Atlantic) recently concluded its competition at Camp Dawson, WV. The winners advancing to the Florida nationals in July are Spc. Matthew Zrebeic (Maryland) and Sgt. 1st Class Erich Friedlein (Pennsylvania).

International Participation: Many states now include partner-nation troops (e.g., Estonia, Uzbekistan, Qatar) in their local competitions through the State Partnership Program to enhance interoperability. Receive SMS online on sms24.me
