Una possibilità è un mondo caratterizzato da frammentazione e logiche transazionali: un mondo di tensioni crescenti e crescente sfiducia, di mercati fratturati e istituzioni indebolite, di cooperazione in declino e calcoli a somma zero. E, per molti versi, è proprio questa la traiettoria che stiamo seguendo oggi. Ma esiste un'altra strada. Un percorso verso la multipolarità: un mondo fondato sull'interdipendenza e sostenuto da una fitta rete di legami economici, politici, sociali e tecnologici. Un mondo in cui molteplici centri di influenza coesistono all'interno di un quadro comune di diritto internazionale e di regole condivise. Un mondo siffatto può aiutarci a evitare tendenze egemoniche e quella che ho definito la "grande frattura": la divisione del pianeta in due blocchi rivali, dotati di sistemi economici, tecnologici e di sicurezza separati".
