Most fans see Yoda’s death in Return of the Jedi as one of the most emotional moments in Star Wars — but it almost never happened.
In The Making of Return of the Jedi book, George Lucas, Lawrence Kasdan, and Richard Marquand openly debated whether Yoda should die at all. Marquand asks, “Is Yoda still going to come back and shimmer at the end?” Kasdan replies, “If we have him alive, he really doesn’t have to.” That’s when George says, “We could have him die.”
Originally, George considered keeping Yoda alive to appear again later as a living mentor. But he changed his mind — deciding that Yoda’s death was essential to complete Luke’s journey as the last Jedi. He told his team, “You’re on your own, kid. You are the last of the Jedi now. This is your diploma.”
Kasdan then suggested Yoda’s death should feel peaceful, not tragic. George agreed, saying that the scene needed to teach that death is not the end of life, but a transition into the Force. That decision gave us one of the most spiritually powerful moments in the saga — and the perfect farewell to a character who embodied the Force itself.
