Niger, alongside Mali and Burkina Faso under the Alliance of Sahel States, has cut ties with former colonial power France and forged closer security partnerships with Russia. Tensions reached a boiling point after a deadly assault at Niamey’s international airport, leading military leader General Abdourahmane Tchiani to accuse Western powers of backing regional instability.
