El mito de la expedición de Dioniso a la India tiene su origen en las Dionisíacas de Nono de Panópolis. En esta epopeya, el dios parte hacia la India con el fin de conquistarla y difundir su culto. Liderando un ejército de bacantes, sátiros y ninfas, Dioniso enfrenta al rey Deríades en batallas marcadas por el vino, el éxtasis y la magia. Armado con los rayos de Zeus y armas divinas forjadas por Hefesto, derrota al rey, transforma el campo de batalla en una celebración y regresa triunfante a Grecia, consagrado como dios del éxtasis, la transformación y la victoria sobre el orden rígido. Al regresar, encuentra a Ariadna abandonada por Teseo en Naxos. Movido por un sueño profético, Dioniso se casa con ella y le concede la inmortalidad.
