Peripeteia is a sudden reversal of circumstances in a story — a change by which the action veers round to its opposite. Coined by Aristotle in Poetics, it's the engine behind cinema's most devastating endings, from Oedipus Rex to American History X. But peripeteia is not the same thing as a plot twist. The Sixth Sense delivers a shocking revelation, but no action backfires — that's recognition without reversal.
In this video, we break down what separates true peripeteia from a standard twist, and how it works hand-in-hand with anagnorisis — the moment a character moves from ignorance to knowledge. Then, with insights from American History X screenwriter David McKenna, we lay out the three rules for writing a reversal that lands: it must feel unexpected but inevitable, it must invert the stakes rather than raise them, and its placement changes everything — with examples from Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, Oldboy, Anora, and Se7en.
