В 1977 году японский рыболовный траулер вытащил из глубин у берегов Новой Зеландии нечто невозможное. Существо было больше девяти метров в длину. Длинная шея, четыре огромных ласта и хвост. Оно выглядело точь-в-точь как создание, которое должно было вымереть вместе с динозаврами, — живое ископаемое, поднятое из моря и истекающее водой. Команда сделала фотографии, провела замеры и взяла образцы тканей. А затем капитан принял решение, потрясшее весь мир: он приказал выбросить чудовище обратно в океан. Тело было потеряно навсегда. Но кого они на самом деле поймали? Ответ удалось найти лишь спустя десятилетия — и он оказался куда страннее, чем кто-либо мог представить.
