NATO-GIPFEL IN DEN HAAG - "Das fünf-Prozent-Ziel ist die richtige Richtung!"Verteidigungsexpertin Claudia Major, inzwischen beim German Marshall Fund tätig, fordert von Europa mehr Eigenverantwortung in der Sicherheitspolitik. Die aktuelle Abhängigkeit von den USA sei riskant, und Investitionen in die eigene Verteidigungsfähigkeit – etwa durch das 5-Prozent-Ziel – seien notwendig. Deutschland könne sich die Ausgaben leisten, müsse jedoch dringend Bürokratie abbauen und Beschaffungsprozesse reformieren, um die Milliarden effektiv zu nutzen. Bei der Rüstungsbeschaffung müsse politisch abgewogen werden, ob schnell im Ausland gekauft oder langfristig die europäische Industrie gestärkt werde. Mit Blick auf Nahost warnte Major, Europa sei dort weitgehend machtlos und zum Zuschauen verdammt, während die USA und Israel die Entscheidungen träfen.
