Inside England’s Most Indian City 🇮🇳🇬🇧
Ever wondered what it feels like to step into a city in England that looks and tastes just like India? In this video, I explore England’s most Indian city where nearly half the population is from the Indian subcontinent! From the famous Golden Mile filled with gold shops, sari stores, sweet stalls, and fresh Indian street food, to vibrant temples and authentic restaurants, this city is like taking a trip to Gujarat without leaving the UK.
Leicester’s Golden Mile, a stretch of Belgrave Road, earned its name for the dazzling display of gold jewellery shops, vibrant clothing stores, and restaurants that sprang up in the late 20th century, creating one of the most famous hubs of Indian culture in the UK.
Its origins trace back to the 1960s and 70s, when a significant wave of Indian migration arrived, particularly from East Africa. Many Indians had originally settled in countries like Uganda and Kenya under British colonial rule, but political upheaval - most notably Idi Amin’s 1972 expulsion of Asians from Uganda - forced thousands to seek new homes.
England, and specifically Leicester, became a key destination due to existing community ties and affordable housing.
Over time, these migrants transformed Belgrave Road into a thriving commercial and cultural centre, making it a focal point for Diwali celebrations, traditional cuisine, and Indian enterprise.
Join me as I eat, explore, and uncover the hidden gems that make Leicester one of the most uniquely Indian spots in the world.
