How a Mother’s Loss Sparked a Movement | Anna Louise Bates | TEDxBute Street
When Anna‑Louise Bates lost her husband and son within hours of each other, she faced the impossible: deciding on organ donation in the midst of shock and grief. Their gifts saved several lives — and changed hers forever. In this deeply moving talk, she shares how that moment sparked a mission to transform how Wales talks about organ donation, from animated films to a memorial garden visible from space. Her message is simple and urgent: have the conversation before you ever need it. I am the CEO and Founder of the welsh charity Believe Organ Donor Support that I set up in 2015 following the passing of my husband and 7 year old son and their organ and tissue donation. This was just 5 days after Wales became the first home nation to adopt the soft opt out legislation but it was clear to me that we really had to look and education and support around organ donation. We have achieved a lot through the last 10 years thanks to the help from the welsh community internationally including an award winning animation with superted animator Mike Young and the first educational organ donation memorial garden to attempt to educate those around still such a taboo subject. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
