Una serie di circostanze per certi versi assurde hanno portato ad una strage il 28 gennaio, nei boschi di Montagnareale, sui Nebrodi messinesi. C'era nebbia quella mattina. Antonio Gatani, 82 anni, andava a caccia di un cinghiale, sente un rumore e coglie un movimento rapido: spara, ma colpisce, non avendolo visto, un altro cacciatore, Giuseppe Pino, che cade a terra morto, raggiunto da cinque pallettoni . Gli altri proiettili raggiungono il fratello di Pino, Devis, 26 anni che viene ferito a un fianco. Vedendo Giuseppe a terra esanime, Devis impugna la carabina e centra al petto l’82enne, originario di Patti, uccidendolo. E qui entra in gioco un quarto uomo: A.S. il 50enne, come gli altri appassionato cacciatore, che aveva accompagnato Gatani a Montagnareale. «C’ero anche io, ero lì e ho partecipato alla sparatoria», racconta agli investigatori.Preso dal panico, vedendo l’amico centrato in pieno e ucciso, A.S, secondo la ricostruzione della Procura, punta il fucile contro Devis, già ferito, e lo finisce.
