Sitio de grutas budistas: las Cuevas de los Mil Budas de Bezeklik

Las Cuevas de los Mil Budas de Bezeklik se encuentran en el cañón de las Montañas, a unos 45 kilómetros al este de la ciudad de Turpan, en la región autónoma uigur de Xinjiang. Son un importante sitio de grutas budistas de la antigua Ruta de la Seda. Su nombre en uigur significa "lugar con murales" o "ladera de la montaña".

Las grutas comenzaron a excavarse entre los siglos V y VI, durante el período de las Dinastías del Sur y del Norte, y continuaron durante las dinastías Tang, Song y Yuan, prolongándose durante siete siglos. Fueron el centro budista de la región de Gaochang durante ese período. Durante el Reino Uigur de Gaochang, entre los siglos IX y XIII, el sitio se convirtió en un monasterio real, alcanzando su etapa de mayor esplendor. La mayoría de los restos y murales conservados hoy en día datan de esta época.

Las cuevas fueron talladas en los acantilados de la orilla occidental del valle de Mutougou. Actualmente se conservan 83 cuevas, de las cuales más de 40 contienen murales, con una superficie total de 1.200 metros cuadrados. Es el conjunto de grutas con mayor riqueza de contenidos conservado en Turpan.
