The SuperSonics Eliminate Pistons from Playoffs (1975)

To affirm what likely sticks out on the front end, the Detroit Pistons were indeed in the Western Conference, until 1978. In 1975, they were one year removed from their most successful season in Detroit (a 52-30 regular season finish and semi-final exit). A year later, they showed signs of regression, finishing just 40-42 with Bob Lanier & Dave Bing in tow, settling for a No. 5 seed and matching up with the Seattle SuperSonics in an opening round best-of-three series.

The Sonics, meanwhile, were in their second season under the tutelage of head coach Bill Russell. Finishing 43-39, the Sonics turned to an unlikely source in their first round win, for it wasn't Spencer Haywood who carried the bulk of the offensive load but rather rookie center Tom Burleson. Burleson more than doubled his regular season scoring output in the series, averaging 22.3 points and 10.7 rebounds in the series victory.

Following their win over Detroit, the Sonics pushed the eventual champion Golden State Warriors to six games before falling in the conference semi-finals.

For the Pistons, it would be their last full year under 1974 Coach of the Year Ray Scott. With future Hall of Famer Dave Bing being traded away in the offseason, the stage was set for a steady franchise decline that would ultimately result in the drafting of Isiah Thomas at the turn of the decade.

On the other hand, the Sonics were headed in a different direction. While Russell led Seattle to back-to-back semi-finals appearances, it was only with the arrival of new head coach Lenny Wilkens that the Sonics took that next step, reaching the NBA Finals in 1978 before winning an NBA championship in 1979.
