Haskell Small's A Game of Go with Game Review by Justin Teng 6D

Haskell "Hal" Small was a renowned pianist, composer, and music teacher, as well as a devoted Go player. He organized the first U.S. Go Congress in 1985 and was a founding member of the National Go Center in 2017. Although Hal passed away on June 1, 2024, he left a lasting legacy as a musician, teacher, husband, father, friend, and leader in the American Go community.

In memory of Hal, the National Go Center devoted the evening of June 3, 2026—what would have been his 78th birthday—to one of his most remarkable creations, A Game of Go. The composition is based on an 1853 game widely regarded as the masterpiece of Ota Yuzo (1807–1856), played against the legendary Honinbo Shusaku (1829–1862).

Following introductory remarks by NGC Executive Director Gurujeet Khalsa and Hal's wife, Betsy Small, Justin Teng 6-dan reviews the game. Betsy then discusses the history and creation of the composition, followed by a performance video of A Game of Go. In the piece, one piano represents White and a second piano represents Black, while the game unfolds move by move on screen, bringing one of Go's greatest masterpieces to life through music.
