Два самых опасных разлома США проявляют признаки разрыва

Учёные внимательно следят за зоной субдукции Каскадия и сейсмической зоной Нью-Мадрид — двумя из самых опасных сейсмических систем США, способными вызвать разрушительные землетрясения в совершенно разных частях страны. Каскадия угрожает тихоокеанскому северо-западу мощнейшим землетрясением в зоне субдукции и цунами, а система Нью-Мадрид находится в глубине центральной части США, где сильные землетрясения исторически ощущались на огромных расстояниях. Новые геологические и сейсмические исследования помогают учёным понять, как накапливается напряжение вдоль этих разломов и какие тревожные признаки могут появиться перед очередным крупным разрывом. В отличие от знаменитого калифорнийского разлома Сан-Андреас, Каскадия и Нью-Мадрид могут затронуть регионы, где миллионы людей и важнейшая инфраструктура могут быть плохо подготовлены к экстремальному землетрясению. Учёные продолжают наблюдать за обеими зонами, отслеживая изменения, которые могут показать, где начнётся следующая крупная сейсмическая катастрофа в США.
