VIDEO INTRODUCTION:
Ladies and gentlemen, SAUDI ARABIA just made the BIGGEST business mistake in HUMAN HISTORY. In 2021, the Prince of Saudi Arabia announced a project so WILD that it cost 8.8 TRILLION DOLLARS. To put that in perspective, 8.8 TRILLION is more than the GDP of JAPAN and INDIA COMBINED. It is 25 TIMES Saudi Arabia's entire annual government budget. It is 5 TIMES the combined revenue of APPLE, GOOGLE, FACEBOOK, AMAZON, and LOUIS VUITTON. And with that money, Saudi Arabia was supposed to build the most ambitious project in the history of civilization. A 170 kilometre long city called THE LINE. Made of mirrored glass. Taller than the Empire State Building. With flying cars, robot maids, dinosaur robots, zero streets, and a giant artificial MOON literally hanging in the sky. It was supposed to be the future of humanity.
Now on paper, this looked UNSTOPPABLE. Because Saudi Arabia had EVERYTHING to make this project possible. They had TRILLIONS of dollars in cash. They had the best architects in the world. They had legendary consultants from McKINSEY and BCG. They had SAM ALTMAN, MASAYOSHI SON, and TRAVIS KALANICK as their advisors. And they had a $500 BILLION budget that they promised to grow to whatever the project needed. So the world was CONVINCED that if any country on Earth could pull this off, it would be SAUDI ARABIA.
But then something SHOCKING happened. 9 YEARS after the announcement. $50 BILLION SPENT. And 98% of THE LINE is STILL UNBUILT. On September 16, 2025, the Saudi sovereign wealth fund quietly SUSPENDED construction. Workers packed up. The site went DARK. And the biggest business dream in human history was OVER. So I went down a rabbit hole. I read the 2,300 pages of leaked documents that the Wall Street Journal exposed, the McKinsey financial models, the internal audit reports, and the actual construction data on NEOM. And what I found is genuinely SHOCKING. Because NEOM did not fail because Saudi Arabia ran out of MONEY. NEOM failed because of a disease that has secretly RUINED some of the biggest projects in human history. It is a disease called DUTCH DISEASE. And every country that depends on ONE industry, ONE commodity, or ONE cash cow is at RISK of catching it. Including INDIA.
THE LINE was supposed to consume 60% of the entire WORLD's annual green steel production. The math on this project never made sense. But every consultant, every executive, and every advisor kept telling the Crown Prince that it would work. And when one manager finally challenged the numbers, he was REMOVED from the project. This is not a story of bad engineering. This is a story of what happens when the most powerful person in the room refuses to hear NO.
So in this case study, I want to answer three questions that will change how you think about NATIONS, LEADERSHIP, and the future of the world's economy forever. Why was SAUDI ARABIA so desperate to build the most ambitious city in human history that they were willing to spend $8.8 TRILLION on it? How did the world's richest kingdom FAIL to build a single city despite having TRILLIONS of dollars in cash, the world's best consultants, and legendary advisors? And most importantly, what are the THREE lessons that INDIA and every developing country in the world MUST learn from Saudi Arabia's TRILLION dollar failure before it is too late? Because if we do not learn these lessons now, our SMART CITIES, our BULLET TRAINS, and our own DREAMS could face the same fate.
