Scientists have uncovered evidence that Antarctica experienced recurring wildfires around ninety million years ago, when the frozen continent was covered by a temperate rainforest. Researchers studying ancient sediment cores found charcoal, amber and peat moss spores that point to repeated fires near the South Pole during the Late Cretaceous period. The region was warmer, swampy and affected by dry seasons and monsoons, with lightning likely providing a natural ignition source. The findings offer new insight into Antarctica’s ancient climate and vegetation when dinosaurs still roamed the continent.
