Chinese car plants coming to Canada?
Prime Minister Mark Carney is in China, but so far, no tangible deals have materialized. Importantly, tariffs on Canadian canola remain in place, and it’s unclear if we will see progress before the trip ends.But Liberal Industry Minister Melanie Joly did open the door to having Chinese vehicle manufacturing come to Canada.
What would that mean for Canada’s current auto manufacturing sector? Would other manufacturers quickly be driven out of business by competitors who don’t play by the same rules?
And what would it mean for Canada’s trade relations with the United States – especially at this critical time as the USMCA/CUSMA free trade deal is up for renewal?
