~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~A glacial lake has burst in Bhutan, and India had only hours to act.
On the evening of 29 October, Shintaphu Lake in Bhutan’s Gasa district gave way. The floodwater raced down the Mo Chhu river, washed away the famous Gasa Tshachu hot springs and cut the highway to Laya. That river becomes the Sankosh when it enters India.
Within hours, the Central Water Commission warned that the flood could reach the India–Bhutan border in six to eight hours. More than 10,000 people were moved to safety in West Bengal’s Alipurduar district overnight. The Sankosh is on red alert, and Assam is watching Dhubri and Kokrajhar closely. No deaths have been reported so far.
Bhutan’s warning reached India in time. But upstream on the Brahmaputra, China has not shared river data with India since its agreement lapsed in 2023. So if a lake bursts in Tibet, who warns us?
In this video, Kinjal Choudhary explains:
What a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) is, and why Shintaphu was already on Bhutan’s danger list
The river route from Bhutan to Assam and Bengal: Mo Chhu → Punatsangchhu → Sankosh → Brahmaputra
How India and Bhutan’s flood warning system worked overnight
Why China’s silence on Brahmaputra data is a national security risk for India
Lessons from Sikkim 2023 and Nepal’s deadly August flood
India’s own risk: the high-risk glacial lakes in the Indian Himalaya
