En el año 2000 apareció en varios foros un usuario llamado John Titor, que afirmaba ser un soldado procedente del año 2036. Según su historia, había viajado al pasado para recuperar una antigua computadora IBM 5100, una máquina aparentemente indispensable para evitar una futura catástrofe informática relacionada con el llamado Problema del Año 2038.

Durante meses respondió preguntas, publicó fotografías de su supuesta máquina del tiempo, explicó teorías físicas basadas en Einstein e incluso describió una función secreta de la IBM 5100 que muy pocas personas conocían en aquella época.
