Life lessons from a catfish | Neil Wertheimer | TEDxMontgomery College
This talk uses the surprising biology of catfish—creatures covered in 200,000 taste buds—to symbolise what it means to move through life with curiosity, constantly “tasting” the world. The speaker argues that curiosity has shaped his joyful and successful career and now plays a crucial role in his work coaching students, many of whom lack inquisitiveness in an age where people often outsource thinking to pundits and social media. The talk highlights the personal, professional, and even societal benefits of curiosity, drawing on scientific research, business examples, and everyday life. It explains different types of curiosity, why it fades with age, and how modern culture replaces genuine exploration with shallow novelty. Ultimately, the talk aims to entertain, inspire, and teach practical ways to revive one’s natural curiosity, showing how questioning more can enrich individual lives and help heal cultural divisions.
