On June 1, a demolition drive was carried out in Madrasi Camp, located adjacent to the Barapula drain in the Jangpura area of Delhi. Acting on the orders of the Delhi High Court, authorities demolished 370 slum dwellings. The action was taken as part of efforts to "clean and widen" the Barapula drain ahead of the monsoon season and to prevent waterlogging in the area.
However, residents who have been living in Madrasi Camp for several decades claim they were promised housing under the "Jahan Jhuggie, Wahin Makaan" (homes where the slums are) scheme during past elections. They are now expressing strong resentment, accusing the BJP-led Delhi administration of going back on its word.
