Macron hits back at Trump over Iran war and NATO | DW News
French President Emmanuel Macron has pushed back against calls for military action to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, warning that such a move would be “unrealistic” and dangerously escalate the conflict.Speaking during a visit to South Korea, Macron also criticised Donald Trump’s shifting stance on Iran and his repeated attacks on NATO, as tensions deepen between the United States and its European allies.
The Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed amid the ongoing Iran war, disrupting global oil and gas supplies and raising fears of wider escalation. While Washington has urged allies to help secure the waterway, France is calling for a diplomatic approach, including dialogue with Tehran.
So is this a tactical disagreement, or a deeper divide between Europe and the United States?
We speak to political analyst Hind Ziane about:
- Why France is rejecting military action in Hormuz
- Whether Europe is diverging from US strategy on Iran
- The risks of escalation in the Gulf
- And what Trump’s NATO rhetoric means for the alliance
