Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on the early modern history continues with a video on the battle of Ramillies in 1706 during the War of the Spanish Succession, which some historians consider to be the World War 0. After his legendary victory at Blenheim, John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, sought another decisive battle that could break the military power of Louis XIV. His plans were repeatedly frustrated by cautious allies, elusive French armies, and the political tensions holding the Grand Alliance together. But in 1706, France finally offered him the opportunity he had been waiting for. At the Battle of Ramillies, Marlborough confronted Marshal Villeroi and a powerful Franco-Bavarian army in the Spanish Netherlands. Using carefully coordinated attacks, deceptive troop movements, and a devastating concentration of cavalry, Marlborough manipulated Villeroi into weakening the decisive sector of his line. What followed became one of the Duke’s greatest tactical masterpieces. This documentary examines the campaigns leading to Ramillies, the opposing armies and their deployments, Marlborough’s battlefield deception, the struggle for Taviers and Ramillies, and the collapse of the Bourbon position. The Allied victory cost Louis XIV control of most of the Spanish Netherlands and transformed the wider War of the Spanish Succession. Discover how Marlborough outmanoeuvred Villeroi and won one of the most decisive European battles of the eighteenth century.
