Ukraine, Defence, Middle East: Von der Leyen Sets EU Agenda before Summit

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen addresses the European Parliament ahead of the EU leaders’ summit on October 15–16 in Brussels. She outlines the key priorities expected to dominate the meeting, including Europe’s competitiveness, continued support for Ukraine, the EU’s 2028–2034 long-term budget, the situation in the Middle East, defence and security, migration and EU enlargement. The debate comes as European leaders face growing pressure over security, trade, energy costs and economic competitiveness. Parliament is also pushing for a stronger long-term EU budget to meet Europe’s defence and economic priorities.
