Il presidente del Comitato militare dell'Alleanza, l'ammiraglio Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, ha dichiarato a Tgcom24 che gli alleati non sono stati oggetto di un attacco secondo quanto previsto dall'articolo 5, ma la condizione attuale non può nemmeno essere definita pienamente di pace, evocando violazioni dello spazio aereo, incidenti con i droni e attività ibride attribuite a Mosca, pur ribadendo che l'Alleanza è pronta a difendere ogni centimetro del proprio territorio.
A queste parole si è aggiunto, quasi in contemporanea, un allarme rilanciato dal quotidiano spagnolo El Mundo: secondo un rapporto della Cia circolato nelle cancellerie europee e ritenuto credibile dai francesi, Mosca starebbe valutando il lancio di droni Gerbera nascosti in container a bordo di navi mercantili, per colpire obiettivi in Italia, Francia e Spagna. Il ministro della Difesa Guido Crosetto ha però precisato che dall'Italia non arrivano conferme dirette alla notizia.
Sullo sfondo, resta l'episodio della base aerea saudita di Ta'if, dove a metà settembre un caccia Eurofighter F-2000 italiano è stato colpito in un'area decentrata della base, senza coinvolgere il personale, secondo quanto riferito dallo stesso Crosetto.
