Le luci dell'aurora boreale, che nella notte tra 19 e 20 gennaio hanno dato spettacolo in buona parte d'Europa, hanno acceso anche il cielo delle Dolomiti bellunesi. Il fenomeno dell'aurora è stato provocato da una severa tempesta geomagnetica di classe G4 iniziata il 19 gennaio e tutt'ora in corso. Avviene quando particelle elettricamente cariche vengono espulse dal Sole a grandi velocità, ad esempio tramite l'espulsione di massa coronale (Cme) avvenuta nei giorni scorsi in concomitanza con un potente brillamento solare di classe X. Quando raggiungono la Terra, le particelle interagiscono col campo magnetico, che leincanala verso i poli, ed eccitano gli atomi che compongono l'atmosfera, che sono quelli che poi emettono le caratteristiche luci rosse, verdi e azzurre.
