The Dark Crystal (en España, Cristal oscuro; en Hispanoamérica, El cristal encantado) es una película británico-estadounidense de fantasía oscura estrenada en 1982, dirigida por Jim Henson (creador de los muppets) y Frank Oz.

Se trata del primer largometraje realizado exclusivamente con marionetas y escenarios móviles. Su diseño corrió a cargo de Brian Froud, ilustrador del libro El mundo del cristal oscuro (The World of the Dark Crystal), publicado en inglés el mismo año del estreno de la cinta.

Además de tener en cuenta su elevado presupuesto, cifrado en unos veinticinco millones de dólares, se necesitó más de cinco años en materializar el guion, en completar los decorados y confeccionar las marionetas, a lo que se sumó la complejidad de las veintiocho semanas de rodaje,[8] pues el grupo de especialistas que accionaba las marionetas debía ocultarse permanentemente para no salir en cuadro.

La obra logró un considerable éxito de taquilla. De acuerdo con los datos oficiales, alcanzó la decimosexta posición entre las más vistas de 1982 en Estados Unidos y fue la más taquillera en Francia y Japón durante 1983.
