Namun, peristiwa berdarah terjadi setelahnya—Sander Thoenes, jurnalis asal Belanda, tewas ditembak tentara Indonesia saat mereka sedang berangsur mundur dari Timor-Leste.Nama Thoenes jadi pengingat akan pentingnya penghormatan pada pers, di mana pun dan di momen apa pun. Liputan ini didukung oleh beasiswa Sander Thoenes Scholarship for Journalists—sebuah program yang digagas Kedutaan Besar Belanda di Indonesia bersama dengan RNW Media dan FPCI Indonesia untuk mengenang keberanian Thoenes.
Lewat program ini, dua jurnalis dari Indonesia dan Timor-Leste diberangkatkan ke Belanda untuk belajar ihwal informasi palsu, kebebasan pers, dan demokrasi. Jurnalis Narasi, Juan Robin, merupakan salah satu peserta terpilih.
