Saudi Arabia-Houthi Crisis Explained: Saudi Arabia is facing growing pressure as Iran-backed Houthi forces expand their presence around Yemen’s Red Sea coast and the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The developments have raised fresh concerns over Saudi oil exports, global shipping and the security of one of the world's most important maritime chokepoints.
According to current reports, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has sought assistance from regional countries, while Israel has reportedly been approached indirectly through US Central Command (CENTCOM) for intelligence and other assistance against the Houthi threat. At the same time, Washington is weighing its response, with US President Donald Trump reluctant to become directly involved while possible strikes against Houthi positions remain under consideration.
The crisis has also put Pakistan’s Makkah Joint Defence Agreement with Saudi Arabia and Türkiye under the spotlight. Pakistan has reaffirmed its solidarity with Riyadh while emphasising the defensive nature of the agreement, raising questions over whether Islamabad would participate in offensive military operations against the Houthis. Pakistan’s government has officially reiterated support for Saudi Arabia following the latest Houthi attacks.
The strategic importance of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait makes this crisis much bigger than the Yemen conflict. The waterway connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and provides a crucial route toward the Suez Canal. Any prolonged disruption could affect oil prices, energy security, international shipping, supply chains and global trade. Recent reporting shows that Houthi advances around the strait are already increasing concerns about maritime security and energy markets.
