Relative Charge of Protons, Neutrons & Electrons

Relative charge in chemistry is like a scorecard for the electrical nature of particles. It's all about understanding whether a particle has a positive, negative, or neutral charge. Imagine a world where particles are like characters in a video game, each with their own unique powers based on their charge.

Atoms are made up of three types of subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons, found in the nucleus, have a positive charge. Electrons, zipping around the nucleus, have a negative charge. Neutrons, also in the nucleus, are the neutral peacemakers with no charge at all. The relative charge of these particles is simple: protons are +1, electrons are -1, and neutrons are 0.

When you combine these particles in an atom, the charges usually balance out. For example, a carbon atom has 6 protons and 6 electrons, making it electrically neutral because the positive and negative charges cancel each other out. However, if an atom gains or loses electrons, it becomes an ion with a net charge. Lose an electron, and you get a positively charged ion; gain an electron, and you get a negatively charged ion.

Understanding relative charge helps explain chemical reactions, bonding, and even why you get shocked when touching a doorknob! It's a fundamental concept that makes the world of chemistry both fascinating and electrifying.
