Eastern DR Congo violence forces mass refugee exodus into Burundi
Tens of thousands of Congolese have fled renewed fighting in eastern DR Congo, with over 80,000 crossing into Burundi.Violence in South Kivu province has displaced at least half a million people in recent months.
Around 8,000 refugees are now sheltering at Cishemere transit camp in Burundi, many sharing overcrowded tents.
Refugees describe repeated displacement, family losses and journeys made in search of safety.
The camp lacks sufficient water, medicine and sanitation, with the rainy season worsening conditions.
A peace deal between DR Congo and Rwanda has failed to halt fighting in South and North Kivu.
Aid agencies warn resources are stretched as Burundi hosts nearly 200,000 refugees overall.
