Padahal, Biya sudah 43 tahun berkuasa dan usianya saat ini 92 tahun.
Dikutip dari Anadolu Agency pada Selasa (15/7/2025), Biya merupakan kepala negara tertua di dunia yang masih menjabat.
Ia membuat pengumuman di media sosial X pada Minggu (13/7/2025) terkait rencana pencalonan Pilpres.
"Saya adalah kandidat dalam pemilihan presiden," tulis Biya.
Biya berkuasa lebih dari empat dekade lalu pada 1982, ketika pendahulunya, Ahmadou Ahidjo mengundurkan diri.
Sejak saat itu, ia belum pernah kalah sekali pun dalam pemilihan umum.
Selama dipimpin Biya, Kamerun pernah mengalami sejumlah pencapaian penting.
Misalnya transisi dari sistem satu partai menuju politik multipartai dan keberhasilan menavigasi krisis ekonomi di masa lalu.
Namun, di balik pencapaian tersebut, masa jabatan Biya juga diwarnai oleh kontroversi.
Pemerintahannya telah lama dikritik karena berbagai isu seperti korupsi, tata kelola yang buruk, dan meningkatnya ketidakamanan.
Isu kesehatan presiden juga menjadi perhatian.
Tahun lalu, Biya menghilang dari sorotan publik selama enam minggu, mendorong otoritas melarang media memberitakan kondisi kesehatannya.
Kesehatan pemimpin negara bahkan disebut sebagai isu keamanan nasional dan pelanggar larangan tersebut diancam dengan tindakan hukum.
Jika Biya kembali terpilih pada Pemilu tahun ini, ia akan mengamankan masa jabatannya yang ke-8.
